Local schools joined football programs throughout the state seeking to find out where they might land with the University Interscholastic League’s bi-annual breakdown of enrollment figures.
In Wood County, Quitman will fall into Class 3A DII, while Mineola and Winnsboro will remain in Class 3A DI for 2018-2019 and 2019-2020. Alba-Golden will remain in Class 3A DII and Hawkins stays in Class 2A DI.
Conference cutoffs were set at, 6A 2,190 and above; 5A DI 1,840 – 2,189 and DII 1,150 – 1,839; 4A DI 790 – 1,149 and DII 505 – 789; 3A DI 335 – 504 and DII 225 – 334; 2A DI 161.5 – 224 and 2A DII 105 – 161.4 Class A (six-man) DI 55.5 – 104.9 and DII 55 and below.
Schools will not know their specific districts until the realignment of districts is announced Feb. 1. District 7-3A DI last season had Quitman, Winnsboro, Mineola, Mt. Vernon, Commerce, Farmersville and Grand saline. Of that group Winnsboro , Mineola, Commerce and Mt. Vernon will remain in Class 3A DI while Quitman and Grand Saline drop to 3A DII and Farmersville moves up to 4A DII.
This year Quitman High School turned in enrollment figures of 293.5, Mineola 464, Winnsboro 463, Alba-Golden 235 and Hawkins 219. Grand Saline was at 309, while Como-Pickton at 223 moved down to Class 2A DI by one student (cutoff is 224). Harmony remains in Class 3A DII with 322 while Rains moves down to class 3A DI with 478. Lone Oak moves up to Class 3A DI with 355. Lindale will stay in 5A, but they will be in DII where they will avoid John Tyler and the larger 5A DI schools.
Quitman Athletic Director Bryan Oakes is looking forward to the new challenge. “There is really no way where we will land in district play. The UIL could send us east toward Harmony and Winona or we could go east with Grand Saline, Alba-Golden and Edgewood,” Oakes noted. “They could also send us north to Leonard, Cooper, Pairs Chisum and Prairiland.”
