Lady Panthers claim 101-22 win over Hampton Prep

Coach Blake Hamrick gets intense giving his girls instructions during a time out during the Alba-Golden bi-district playoff game with Hampton Prep at Wills Point Tuesday night.

Scoring over 100 points for the first time this season, the Alba-Golden Lady Panthers opened the second season of the 2016-2017 basketball campaign with a sizzling 101-22 victory over Hampton Prep in the bi-district round of the state playoffs last Tuesday night at Wills Point.

The game was all but over in the first quarter when the Panthers outscored Hampton 18-6. By halftime Alba-Golden had advanced its lead to a whopping 41 points at 49-8, and it was all over but the shouting.

Coach Blake Hamrick’s Lady Panthers brought a full arsenal of offensive weapons to begin the playoff season, having 11 players crack the scoring column and seeing four of them score in double figures. For the night, the Lady Panthers shot 55.1 percent from the field, hitting 32 of 50 two pointers (64 percent) and 6 of 9 three-point shots (31.6 percent). At the free throw line Alba-Golden was 19 of 28 for a 67 percent accuracy rate.

The Lady Panthers were not sleeping on defense either, pulling down 43 rebounds collecting 21 steals during the 48 minutes of playing time.

In that explosive second quarter that knocked Hampton clean out of the contest, Alba-Golden got nine points from Gracie Pendergrass, six from Grace Bizzell, four from Shelby Wright, three each from Lindsey Roberts, Morgan Curtis, and Ashlyn Roberts, two from Briana Weissert, and one from Ginny Carson. That was a most impressive eight-player scoring parade in one period of play.

As usual Wright was the leading scorer for the Lady Panthers, netting 11 two-points shots and hitting three of four foul shots for a total of 25 points. Pendergrass came next in the scoring parade with 16. Also scoring in double figures were Bizzell with 12, Chadwick with 11 (all in the second half), and Weissert and Carson with 10 points each.

Pendergrass’ 10 rebounds and four steals set the pace for the defense.

The Lady Panthers moved on in the playoffs to play Howe of District 10-3A in the second round on Friday in Royce City (see separate story). The Lady Bulldogs earned their spot against Alba-Golden by defeating Whitesboro, 65-45, in the bi-district round.
